Reported Questions

• Siempre se pone el sujeto antes del verbo en ‘reported questions’ y nunca se usa el auxiliar do/does/did. Ejemplo: 

What did you do yesterday? 

He asked me what I had done yesterday. 

• En yes/no preguntas se usa if o whether. Ejemplo: 

Are you Spanish? 

He asked me if I was Spanish. 

Do you live here? 

She asked me whether I lived here. 

*No se pone la puntuación ‘?’ en reported questions. 

• Se usan las palabras where, when, who, what, which, why, whose en reported questions sin el verbo auxiliar. Ejemplos: 

Where do you live? He asked me where I lived. What do you like doing in your free time? She asked me what I liked doing in my free time. 

• Se dice: She asked me, he asked him, we asked them, they asked us etc para introducir la pregunta en reported speech.

Ejemplos

1. What do you like doing in your free time? ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?

She asked him what he liked doing in his free time.

2. Which school does your son go to? ¿A qué colegio va tu hijo?

I asked her which school her son went to.

3. Where did you go on holiday last year? ¿A dónde fuiste de vacaciones el año pasado?

He asked us where we went on holiday last year.

4. Are they from here? ¿Son de aquí?

We asked her whether/if they were from here.

5. Can you swim? ¿Sabes nadar?

He asked me if I could swim.
